Foodies & Fashionistas: Use Your Natural Inclinations to Diet Better For Your Personality Type
Convo with foodie friend on the phone:
“Just scramble an egg or something.” <annoyed>
“I am always frying an egg, don’t you look at my stories?” <equally annoyed>
“Yeah, yeah I know, kale egg, egg kale.” <annoyed, and disgusted with lack of variety>
“Hey! There are mushrooms too!” <seeking redemption, I ain’t BASIC>
I am sure you have heard that one key of many successful CEO’s and notable people in the world, is their ability to take some decisions off the table to free up their energy to take on more exciting pursuits in their lives, thus reducing decision fatigue.
Obama, Zuckerburg, Jobs and many others have noted at some time or another that they prefer to wear a bit of a “uniform” and get on with their day. If I, however, were to attempt this and be sanctioned every day to the same turtleneck nonsense it would only result in a revolt in which I had 7 different styles of “turtleneck.” Each would be ripped, pulled pinned or re-worked in such a way to make it unique, as this is my drive to do.
I would hate it, and it wouldn’t really work for me as I would be too focused on how to subvert the concept and would totally miss the point.
Similarly, you have foodies.
They need novelty in every bite.
They are driven by their food discovery and enjoyment of often, the process.
Since food isn’t the thing, I need to get creative with, I have no problem eating baked chicken, kale, and mushrooms sautéed in olive oil and a single small red potato; like every day.
I can empathize, with that for a foodie to adhere to not just a diet but a LIFESTYLE CHANGE that comes for their fancy food outings probably feels almost as stifling as it would be for me to wear a black turtleneck year-round. Let me be clear you don’t need to be a foodie to like novelty in your food life, we ALL like novelty in our lives in one form or another. To achieve, however, some level of success in hitting your personal goals though ,you gotta maintain a routine, (at least in some parts of your life).
From a novelty-seeking fashionista (I hate that word by the way) to my foodie kinfolk here are some tips to successfully navigate your Wilted Pea Shoots, “Parmigiano-Reggiano,” and Shaved Australian Black Winter Truffles habit (HAND-CUT “CAPELLINI” description courtesy of Per Se 7.25.19 menu)
Redirect your creative energy from reading yelp reviews religiously to reading recipes.
If you are anything like me, busy and don’t especially enjoy cooking (or cleaning), the above can be a tough pill to swallow.
Not to mention, if part of your foodie pursuit is the love of ambiance, you are going to need a few more tactics up your sleeve, so you don’t feel like you are missing out.
Try, fortifying yourself a bit with some of the boring stuff you know you need to eat, and fill up a little.
Order an appetizer (or two) instead of the main event.
Split a plate whenever possible.
The staff will hate you, or you will pay money for the privilege ,but no one said it was going to be easy.
Finally, don’t drink ALL the super fancy cocktails all the time (a lot of sugar). I save those days for a day that I am not eating out, you will rarely if ever find me going for drinks and then dinner. It’s acqua naturale for me.
In the beginning, a hardcore foodie will feel daunted by this undertaking. I won’t lie to you if you are trying to go beyond basics and lose some significant weight then KNOW you will need to cut it out (for a while).
At least till you re-calibrate and can be trusted in public with a fork, knife and a cloth napkin in your lap again. This my friends is what we call a DIET, but eventually, much like my tricked out turtleneck you too will find a way to make this change fit snugly in your life and “look like you.”
My fellow foodie friends, I can’t wait till we chow down again, but mind if we split the main?
